Brooklyn Young Filmmakers MAKE A FILM Class Series is held twice a year in the Spring and the Fall. The series three classes are:
- “Intro to Scriptwriting: Blueprint for Making A Film”
- “Getting Started in Film: Becoming a Production Assistant & Organizing A Low-No Budget Film Shoot”
- “Make A Film: Pre-Production & the Shoot”.
BYFC offers the first two classes through New York City College of Technology’s Division of Continuing Ed

INTRO TO SCRIPTWRITING: Blueprint for Making A Film – (FLM 100) Development

A comprehensive introduction to screenwriting and how a script is used by all departments as the ‘blueprint’ for making a film. Students will learn how to write short scripts with a focus on three act structure; character development; building back story; foreshadowing; and using props and set as visuals to help advance and deepen the storyline. One of the student scripts will be selected for production in the third class.

A primer on how to produce a low budget film (i.e. choosing a script and developing it for production; finding a location; budget; securing a cinematographer and gaffer; production design: sets/props/wardrobe/&make-up; and feeding your army). Also covered are the basics of getting started as a production assistant (i.e. shaping a standout resume when you have little experience; where to look for unpaid PA jobs that will get you the experiences and contacts that can lead towards paid work; and what to do to be the PA who everyone wants to work with again). In this class we will workshop the student script chosen for production and turn it into a professional level shooting script.

The class will collaborate with emerging young filmmakers who will head the camera and lighting departments. Students who graduated from previous BYFC shoots will head all other departments (including Producer, 1st Assistant Director, and Script Supervisor); assist with training the new students; and coordinate a Community Casting Call and Scavenger Hunt for materials. This class will be offered by Brooklyn Young Filmmakers at location TBA in Fort Greene area of Brooklyn.
