Brooklyn Young Filmmakers wants to play matchmaker
to musicians and filmmakers looking to score!

BYFC Composer Miles Arntzen

Afro-Funk Musician & Composer, Miles Arntzen http://emefemusic.blogspot.com/

“Hearing my music played in Brooklyn Young Filmmakers film OPEN/CLOSE was a great feeling. I felt like I was making an imprint on the story, shaping the dialogue, and defining the mood. Music has so many utilities to tap into – rhythm, melody, harmony, color – which are all linked to the body’s emotions. Music and film are a perfect match! I was so happy to be a part of the movie and literally see my music unfold before my eyes.” – Miles Arntzen

ARE YOU A MUSICIAN LOOKING TO SCORE!

A number of talented emerging New York musicians have gifted Brooklyn Young Filmmakers with one-time use rights to original music for our short films. None of them had ever put their music to film before, and all were thrilled with the results. We want to support emerging New York musicians who are also interested in doing original scoring or providing already produced songs for low budget films. And we want to help other low-no budget filmmakers enhance, heighten, and balance their films with great music.

Brooklyn Young Filmmaker’s first step to becoming Music-To-Film Matchmakers will be to register a group of at least (30) New York City Musicians who have rights to their music and want to explore the possibility of putting it to film.

If you are an interested Musician please fill out the Questionnaire (link to Questionnaire) . You must have your music online or in a file that can be emailed. We will acknowledge by email the receipt of your application. We are looking to showcase diverse kinds of music. It must be well produced and not offensive to any group with its lyrics (critical is fine – just not offensive). Within a month after notifying you that we received you application, we will contact you and let you know if at this time we would like to add you to our Musicians Directory.

We are looking for Musicians interested in allowing limited one-time use rights to low budget films in post production. Once we have (30) Musicians signed-up, we will publicize the directory and link to samples of the music. Low budget Filmmakers who have films in Post Production and are looking for music will be able to sample the music to search for music that might enhance their films. If a Filmmaker is interested in one of the Musicians, the Filmmaker must be able to send at least a clip from the film in post and the film’s script. The Musician will decide if he/she wants to have a dialogue with the Filmmaker to discuss music.

If the Musician and Filmmaker strike a deal for one-time use of music, then the Filmmaker must pay a minimum of ($30) per song, half ($15) to go to the Musician and half ($15) to be donated to Brooklyn Young Filmmakers for its matchmaking services. The Musician will be free to independently ask for and negotiate with the Filmmaker for a higher fee for the music, beyond the minimum ($30) fee. The Musician will also be free to barter with the Filmmaker to ask for assistance with producing a Music Video.

Brooklyn Young Filmmakers will offer a sample of a Music Use Agreement, but the Musician and Filmmaker will be free to develop their own contract.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC TO FILM

Editing the short films we have shot as part of the BYFC MAKE A FILM Classes has taught us the incredibly importance role Music often plays in successfully completing a film.

Music can save a film. It can add the extra pop of vibrancy that turns a good scene into a great scene. It can effectively bridge two parts that don’t fit together. Music is a Character. Music is Production Design. Directors and Editors use Music to seduce and hypnotize the viewer into liking their films more.

With OPEN/CLOSE, the BYFC film now for sell at our STORE, we used “FLY”, lyrics and music composed and performed by Miles Arntzen http://www.myspace.com/milesarntzen/music, to give clear meaning to a scene that otherwise could have been interpreted different ways. In another scene, the Afro-Funk of “JUMP & STOMP”, composed by Miles Arntzen and performed by EMEFE http://www.myspace.com/milesarntzen/music, added an energy and rhythm that helped to smoothly blend the performance styles of two actors in a way not experienced without the music.

That’s film. Sometimes a film really needs the right music to complete it.
