COMMUNITY FILMMAKING

Brooklyn Young Filmmakers Center is developing a Community Filmmaking model to give residents of Fort Greene public housing, and other Brooklynites underrepresented in the New York film industry, the opportunity to get their feet wet in low budget narrative filmmaking, while receiving an introduction to how the New York City film industry works.

Brooklyn Young Filmmakers goal is to put diverse community members together in production assistant teams to work on two types of low “no-budget” productions:

1) Short films that are produced as part of the Brooklyn Young Filmmakers “MAKE YOUR OWN FILM” classes. These are 5-10 minutes films shot in one location over the course of 1 to 2 days. Students are cast as actors as well as working on the crew.

2) Narrative films of emerging filmmakers that Brooklyn Young Filmmakers will co-produce. These films can range in length from 15 to 30 minutes and have 7 to 10 shooting days. In addition to helping struggling filmmakers better organize their shoots, their stories, and their limited budgets, BYFC will recruit film professionals (production manager, wardrobe, make-up, sets, gaffer, editor, storyboard artist, etc.) as consultants to the emerging filmmakers – and let community members sit in on the lessons. BYFC students, in addition to being PAs on the shoot, will participate in neighborhood scavenger hunts for donation of materials and locations.
