An Introduction to the Planning Steps and Jobs Involved in Shooting A Low Budget Short Scripted Film

Students from the Brooklyn Young Filmmakers “MAKE A FILM” classes, assisted by local film professionals, will demonstrate how to prepare for, crew, rehearse, and shoot a low budget short film by actually doing a mock shoot on the set created for MY FAMILIA, the short film the BYFC Make A Film Class will be shooting the following weekend. Audience members will be invited to participate in directing and acting exercises.
TOPICS COVERED:
- Script as a blueprint and how it might need to change when you have the actual set and actors
- Working with actors (including how to help an actor change what they are doing when it’s not working)
- Using wardrobe, make-up, props, and set to expand upon the visuals of an actor’s performance, and to
heighten the production values of the world the camera captures.
- Developing a shot list and lighting design
- Location planning
- Rolling camera, hot sets, set do’s and don’ts
- Continuity – making sure different shots will edit together well (including following the movement of props
and body parts)
- Properly using a boom and a sound mixer
- Basics you need in your production assistant kit
- Feeding your army
(*The Farragut Community Center is located in the first floors of a residential building in Fort Greene public housing. The entrance to the center is around the back of the building near the playground. Cross street is Navy Street Five long blocks from the F train-York St Station)
